Whose Magazine? A Youth Publication, THE GREEN JOURNEY SERIES with Black Pearl Market Place is proud to present THE FREEDOM MARKET.

THE FREEDOM MARKET brings the flavors of New Orleans to a unique opportunity for shopper and vendor alike. Meet amazing artists, to companies and brands with a local to global vibe with a focus on minority owned and black businesses. The Freedom Market brings together wonderful energy, products and services from vendors from around the world. Black Pearl Market Place creates temporary markets in the style of the street markets familiar to the New Orleans roots of the organization. Street markets are as old as humans have been buying and selling. The internet is the new street and The Freedom Market is excited to create a special living experience.

I began in 2020 as a vendor for the first BPMP Online Pop Up. I thought it was just a weekend experience. What I experienced was more than I imagined. As of now, I'm a core member to BPMP Cooperative. My children are active in Whose News and I have increased my skills in technology as the Coordinator for OnLine Markets.

            What's In The Name?

In our everyday life, freedom is present. Even though we know this, many of us, are faced with difficulties that may compromise the views we see. In a world filled with disrespect, hatred, injustices and little civility. THE FREEDOM MARKET is a place where we discuss, celebrate and share our similarities.

Our past plays a crucial role in our present. For example, when the Civil War began in 1860, the United States consisted of 37 states. The compromise of 1850 had divided the states in the Eastern portion of the United States into free states and slave states and prevented the spread of slavery westward as the US expanded west. Although slavery had been banned via the US Constitution in 1808, chattel slavery still existed in the US until 1865.

When the Civil War broke out, those states who still had slavery fought to protect America’s most horrific and peculiar institution. Ultimately, the Confederacy would lose at Appomattox and the Civil War would conclude with 500,000 men dead on both sides.

June 19, 1865 is a special date in the African-American community because that was the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce that slavery had ended. Although this was 2 years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, this date has been commemorated in the 150 years since as a day of freedom in the black community. These formerly enslaved people would join a culture of existing free men and women that existed as a part of New Orleans culture and history.

How do these examples play into the current climate? Know that the richness, and yet painful histories intertwine.  Welcome to The FREEDOM place which encourages collaboration, commerce with allies and hold our storytelling to high esteem.  Through discussions, presentations, art and more! We introduce a different type of market that educates and celebrates.. we are THE FREEDOM MARKET.

The Green Journey Series was a First Saturday event at New Orleans food incubator at the St. Roch Market, on St. Claude Ave. The aim before COVID19,  create a monthly art showcase with vendors that’s engaging, educational, fun, and culturally rich. The Green Journey Series is a smaller open-air market with a festive vibe. A community presence infused with regional and national artists and vendors ranging from second-hand clothing, soy candle, hand-made jewelry to healing arts practitioners. We have a focus on earth-friendly, eco, ethical products and services. Artists who utilize recycle or repurposed are encouraged to participate. Our market is infused with performers as musicians, poets, fire swayers, art demonstrations on recycling, a yoga to a vegan dessert class. We are reaching out to celebrate the community. We bring our flavor to Black Pearl MarketPlace, THE FREEDOM MARKET..
